Parents and Grandparents Sponsorship
How to Get Your Parents And Grandparents Sponsorship to Join you in Canada?
If you’re a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, you can sponsor your parent and grandparent to come to Canada through the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP). Once they become permanent residents, they’ll be able to enjoy many benefits in Canada.
Some of the benefits they would get are access to free healthcare, being able to work or study without a permit, and eventually becoming eligible to apply for Canadian citizenship.

Are you Eligible to Sponsor?
To apply for parent and grandparent Sponsorship (along with their dependents) to Canada, you must:
- Be at least 18 years old;
- Live in Canada;
- Be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident of Canada, or a person registered in Canada as an Indian under the Canadian Indian Act;
- Have enough money to support the people you want to sponsor.
How much income do you need to sponsor parents and grandparents?
Every year, the Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) releases a table with the minimum yearly income that potential sponsors need to have to be eligible for sponsoring their parents or grandparents. Even though the required income level for 2022 has not been published yet, by using last year’s guidelines, we can get an idea of what may be required:

Given the fact that numerous sponsors might have been financially struck by COVID-19, for 2020 and 2021, the required income has only been reduced to what is necessary instead of what would usually be needed, plus an additional 30%.

Alternatives to Parents and Grandparents Sponsorship
The super visa is an excellent alternative to PGP for those parents and grandparents who wish to stay in Canada for an up timespan of up to five years. The Super visa also permits multiple entries into the country over 10 years.
The Super Visa may be a more opportune choice than the PGP, as applications can be submitted year-round with no quotas or limits on the number of visas issued annually.
However, please note that a super visa does not have the same benefits as having permanent residence status. In addition, those with a super visa are required to be insured by a Canadian medical insurance company.
Super Visa for Parents and Grandparents
If you are a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, then you may apply for a super visa for your parent(s) and/or grandparent(s).
The super visa is a great alternative to the standard visitor visa because it grants your parents and grandparents an extended stay in Canada. Although, meeting the requirements can be more specific and difficult.
There are specific requirements that must be met in order to apply for a super visa for your parents or grandparents.
If you have a child or grandchild in Canada:
- Must meet the Minimum Necessary Income requirement based on your family size
- Sign a letter promising financial support for your relatives who are visiting
- Provide proof of your income
For the parents or grandparents outside Canada:
- Get medical insurance from a Canadian insurer which is
-Valid for at least one year
-At least CAD$100,000 in medical coverage
-Proof of payment
- Take an immigration medical exam performed by a doctor approved by the government of Canada (panel physician)
- Meet all the other requirements for entry to Canada
